The Ultimate Guide to Hawaii Botanical Gardens

A visit to Hawaii is impossible without a botanical garden trip. While in the area, visit one of these four beautiful gardens: the Moanalua Gardens, the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, the Nani Mau Gardens, and the Foster Botanical Garden. Apart from these gardens, you can also try vising Byodo-in Temple for another fun adventure. Each one offers unique experiences that are sure to make your visit worthwhile.

     Moanalua Gardens

You can drive through the park in under 20 minutes or camp overnight. Its name means "place of tranquility," filled with various tropical plants. If you don't have time to hike, there are numerous trails throughout the park. There are also many picnic areas and camping facilities for visitors. Moanalua Gardens is an excellent place to spend a relaxing day.

     Nani Mau Gardens

When planning a vacation to Hawaii, you should spend some time exploring natural gardens. Despite their popularity, Hawaii botanical gardens in Oahu are often under-visited. The botanical gardens on Oahu are locally focused, each with its mission. For example, the Halawa Xeriscape Garden teaches residents about water-conscious landscaping, while the Lyon Arboretum provides hundreds of acres of gardens to wander through. The Manoa Heritage Center combines cultural preservation and natural landscaping.

     Foster Botanical Garden

The perfect place for a relaxing getaway, the Foster Botanical Garden offers a quiet setting far away from the city. Located on a hilltop in Honolulu, the Garden is home to more than a thousand tropical plants, including orchids, bromeliads, palm trees, and cycads. Many of these trees date back to the 1853 lease of land by Queen Kalama.

     Sadie Seymour Botanical Garden

The Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens are located on the grounds of the Kona Educational Foundation Center on Hawaii's Big Island. This 1.5-acre botanical Garden was founded in 1986 by landscape architect Scott Seymour, whose mother, Sadie Seymour, founded the outdoor circle in 1948 to promote the natural beauty of the Kona community. The gardens contain native Hawaiian plants and cultivated specimens from around the world. In addition to the Botanical Garden, the Garden has a horticultural library and an educational center for visitors to learn about Hawaii's tropical plants and flowers.
