Bon-Sho Sacred
Bell
The Bell House in the
Byodo-In Temple has a 3-ton, 5-foot-tall brass bell called bon-sho. This bell
was cast in Osaka, Japan, from a bronze and tin mixture similar to the bell
found in Uji Byodo In's temple bell house. It is thought that the original bell
is more than 9000 years old. The bon-sho, prized for its distinctive shape and
tone, is believed to cleanse the mind and prevent temptation.
